President: The hard work of artists is what makes a nation

Modern thinking coupled with the hard work of skilled artists is what makes a nation, states President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He made the remark while speaking at the inauguration of the Faruma International Youth Art Festival 2023 on Monday.

In his speech, President Solih highlighted on the long history of artists in Maldives, including traditional crafts such as stone craft and lacquer work to sports and entertainment.

He said the intricate works which went into reassembling the Kalhuvakaru Mosque along was evidence of the talent and skill of local artists.

He noted that artists had lacked opportunities to showcase their talents.

“It is the birth of artists and critics that lead to development and civilization of countries and societies. Maldives is a living example of this. This country has a long history of artists full of talent,” he said.

President Solih said his administration’s goal is to develop creative youth.

He said the participation of so many local artists in the art festival inaugurated Monday serves as encouragement to his administration’s efforts to develop human resources in the country.

The Faruma International Youth Art Festival is underway with over 80 artists from eight different countries. It is the first such festival to be held in Maldives.

The festival will continue until May 13 at the Youth Center.
