Nineteen people were allegedly involved in the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old from a northern island.
Police, on Monday, said they have launched an investigation with respect to a report made on April 29th regarding the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl at a northern island.
They did not disclose the atoll and the island where the sexual abuse took place in order to protect the minor’s identity.
Residents of the respective island suspect that the girl was sexually abused by 19 men. They include some of her family members and individuals who are not from the island.
Some of the residents also suspect that the girl’s mother was aware of sexual abuse. They also claim that the mother has been refusing to cooperate with authorities investigating the case.
As per the residents, the girl has not attended school during Ramadan.
The president of the island council where the sexual abuse occurred did not respond to phone calls by Sun to inquire more regarding the case. Meanwhile, the vice president hung up the phone after Sun’s journalist identified themselves.
No authorities, in official capacity, have made any comments on the case.
Sun has learned that the victim has been brought to Male’ City under Gender Ministry’s custody to treat the injuries she had sustained. She has also been granted protection.
