Adam Rameez, the Central Henveiru representative of Male’ City Council, has left the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) amid an investigation against him for possible misconduct.

PPM spokesperson Heena Waleed confirmed the party received Rameez’s resignation letter on Tuesday night.

The resignation of Rameez, a PPM senator, comes amid an internal investigation against him for possible misconduct. The party has not disclosed details regarding the investigation.

Rameez reportedly came under fire after he allegedly began secretly campaigning for the Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the upcoming presidential election, instead of PPM’s official candidate former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is currently in prison.

Rameez was not immediately available for comment regarding the allegations.

Heena denied reports Muizzu is also under investigation over the issue.

Yameen will not qualify for the election if the money laundering conviction against him stands. However, PPM continues to maintain there are not considering any other candidate except for Yameen.
