Maldives Customs seized gold from a passenger that traveled to Maldives from Abu Dhabi via air who attempted to smuggle the item by ingesting it.

The gold was seized from a 43-year-old Indian man.

Customs said that a body scan was conducted on a passenger who arrived in the Maldives on a Wizz Air aircraft on March 17th after finding his actions suspicious which led to the discovery of concealed items inside his body.

They detailed that when the man was questioned – he admitted to concealing gold inside his body. The gold removed from his body, alongside the packing, weighed 361 grams.

Customs said the case is under further investigation.

As per the law, a permit is required to import gold to the Maldives from foreign countries. Therewith, importing gold any other way is illegal.
