Maldives State Shipping (MSS)’s managing director Abdulla Saeed is set to be appointed as the new managing director of State Trading Organization (STO).

The top post at STO fell vacant following the dismissal of Hussain Amr Mohamed Rashad last Sunday. Amr was dismissed after he refused to back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s re-election and aligned himself with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed – who lost the party’s presidential primary - instead.

President’s Office spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed told Sun that the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) was sent a formal request seeking Saeed’s appointment to STO on Tuesday.

Saeed has served as cabinet secretary during the first MDP administration, after which he took over management of Maldives National Shipping Limited (MNSL).

He currently manages MSS, a subsidiary of STO.

STO’s chief financial officer Mohamed Nizam has been serving as acting managing director since Amr’s dismissal.
