Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives kick off Girls to Code Laamu Edition

Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives have launched the Girls to Code Laamu Edition.

The Girls to Code program teaches participants basic coding skills by using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

By the end of the classes, the participants – who have had no prior background in coding – will practice what they have learnt and apply their skills by creating a website of their own.

The classes began on Sunday and will be conducted online for a period of two months.

The program is targeted exclusively to girls, between 14 to 20 years, with the objective to inspire and empower women to join technology fields and address the gender gap in the field.

Speaking at the opening of the Girls to Code Laamu Edition, Dhiraagu’s CSR Manager Bishara Hameed said coding is a useful skill that will open doors to a world of possibilities.

“Whichever career path you may choose, you will find that coding will become such a beneficial skill that would give you confidence and open doors to a world of possibilities for your future,” she said.

President of Women in Tech Maldives, Mariyam Asna Saeed said the program teaches girls not just coding language, but also other important life skills.

“The Girls to Code program will teach participants very important skills – apart from the coding language used in building websites, the program will also teach them problem-solving skills and different ways to approach issues,” she said.

The Girls to Code Laamu Edition is the fourth edition of the Girls to Code series, the first of which was held in 2019 in Fuvahmulah City. The second and third editions were conducted in 2020 and 2021 in GDh. Thinadhoo and HDh. Kulhudhuffushi respectively.
