Magnitude 7.1 quake strikes Indonesia; no threat to Maldives

There is no threat to Maldives from the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that occurred in the Molucca Sea near Indonesia, states Maldives Meteorological Service.

 

The quake struck at 11:06 am on Wednesday (Maldivian time).

The quake struck at a depth of 64-kilometers off the coast of Manado city in North Sulawesi and close to the neighboring Halmahera Island, where tremors were also felt.

The epicenter is located 5,948 kilometers from Male’, according to Maldives Meteorological Service.

However, there is no threat to Maldives, said Maldives Meteorological Service.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.
