ADK Hospital has opened the first Hyperbaric Treatment Unit established in a Maldivian hospital.
The new unit was opened in a ceremony held at the hospital Tuesday evening by Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom.
The unit has two chambers, and comes equipped with three specialist doctors and a team of trained nurses.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mausoom noted that diving is an important part of the Maldivian tourism sector. He said that the government would always support initiatives designed to elevate Maldives as the most popular tourist destination.
“I don’t believe this is something ADK introduced to make a profit. I believe this is a service focused towards ensuring the safety of divers. I see these hyperbaric oxygen chambers as healing machines,” he said.
Speaking at the ceremony, ADK’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Abdulla Niyaf said that services from ADK’s Hyperbaric Treatment Unit isn’t limited to diving incidents.
“These chambers will also be used to heal the injuries on the body and eliminate germs,” he said.
Hyperbaric treatment is mainly used to treat diving decompression sickness.
