Man sentenced to 10 years for sexual abuse of young girl

The Criminal Court found a man from K. Maafushi guilty of sexual abuse of a young girl on Sunday, sentencing him to 10 years in prison.

Mohamed Shaiban, Nasreeruge, K. Maafushi, was charged with unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

The incident in question took place on April 4, 2020, in the bedroom of the girl’s home.

Shaiban was accused of taking the girl to one of the bedrooms in the three-room house, and groping her.

He pled ‘not guilty’ to the charge.

During the sentencing hearing Sunday, Judge Hussain Faiz Rashad found the testimony of the victim was consistent with other evidence submitted in the case, and that she had no malicious intent in filing the complaint against Shaiban.

Shaiban was found guilty of the charge and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The two years he has spent in jail during the trial was considered as time served, and he therefore has seven years and four months left to serve.

Shaiban was also found guilty of possession of pornography, and was sentenced to one month and six days in prison.

He was charged will possession of pornography after the police found pornographic photos and videos on his phone following his arrest.
