Two outbound travelers were arrested from the Gan International Airport in Addu City on Thursday, after they claimed to be carrying a bomb.

A police spokesperson told Sun that two people were arrested from the Gan International Airport at approximately 05:25 pm over a bomb threat.

They were identified as a 58-year-old Maldivian female and a 61-year-old Maldivian male.

The police shared the bomb threat with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

“The MNDF searched their luggage but found no such item,” said the spokesperson.

The case is under investigation by the police.

Though uncommon, a few travelers have been arrested over the years over bomb threats, many of which turn out to be hoaxes.

Bomb threats are investigated as serious terror crimes.
