Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Wednesday signed an agreement to provide treatment to inmates without having to be brought to capital Male’ City.

The agreement was signed at IGMH by Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu and IGMH’s Chief Operating Officer Ibrahim Saleem.

According to MCS, transporting prisoners from one place to the other was problematic and expensive. Hence, the aim of signing this agreement was to treat inmates and those in detention under their care by specialists, while still in the detention centre.

Under the one-year agreement, IGMH will send super specialists, specialists, nurses and other technical staff to detention centres, and will treat a minimum of 20 patients at a time.

Additionally, MCS said that this arrangement would provide great ease to those seeking the treatments as well.

Moreover, this would be a much safer option to provide treatment to prisoners, despite the situation of COVID-19, added MCS.
