Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated Road Development Corporation (RDC) incurs the biggest loss due to Male’ Streetscaping Project being put on halt.

Speaking at a television program broadcasted by ‘Dhivehi Channel’, Mayor Muizzu said that this is the fourth month since the Streetscaping Project has been put on halt. He further detailed that RDC officials were extremely concerned over the halt as Streetscaping Project is their biggest project.

“Because the project has been put on halt, they are not receiving the monies they are entitled to,” he added.

Mayor Muizzu said that the project is one that has been “inherited” by the current Male’ City Council from the previous one. He also said that many discussions have been held with Planning Ministry and Finance Ministry in order to kick start the project.

“The two ministries are throwing the ball at each other, or playing a blame game. It has been about four months since we have been tackling this,” he had said.

Speaking further, Mayor Muizzu said that the Streetscaping Project is to proceed as how it was previously planned. He noted that the only change brought to the initial plan was to lay asphalt on some major roads instead of surface finishing stones. As per the Mayor, the change was brought with approval from Planning Ministry, and within the confinements of budget.

Mayor Muizzu stressed that the government is uncooperative regarding the projects carried out by Male’ City Council. In this regard, he detailed that letters sent by the Council to the president and government ministries often go unanswered.
