Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Council of K.Huraa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to protect the mangrove of the island.

Speaking to 'Sun', the President of Huraa Council Eesa Ahmed explained that the MoU was signed prior to handing over MVR 700,00 that previously agreed to be allocated to the mangrove.

He revealed that the money was initially allocated from a UNDP fund, however, due to various reasons there were delays in handing over the money was to the council.

Moreover, Eesa noted that although the MoU was signed, it is unclear when the council will receive the actual funds.

Pointing out that many conservationists visit Huraa Mangroves, Eesa stated that they have attempted to acquire funds to develop the area on multiple occasions. he added that while Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was working on the island's harbour project, the mangrove was dredged and cleaned.

The Huraa Mangrove is the only mangrove in the entire Kaafu Atoll.
