Transport Authority dissolved

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the bill to repeal the Maldives Transport Authority Act on Monday, dissolving Maldives Transport Authority.

The bill to repeal the law was passed by the Parliament on November 29. The bill was ratified by the President on Monday morning.

With the enactment of the bill, all civil servants employed at the Maldives Transport Authority will be transferred to the Transport Ministry.

Assets belonging to the Maldives Transport Authority, along with all the rights and obligations conferred to the authority under law and under any agreements will also be transferred to the Transport Ministry.

The government presented the bill to repeal the law stating that the work of the Maldives Transport Authority overlapped with that of Transport Ministry. President Solih has previously stated that he expected the dissolution of Maldives Transport Authority and subsequent changes to Transport Ministry’s structure will improve efficiency.

He also said that decentralizing vehicle registration and charging the work to local council’s will reduce the burden on the central government.

President Solih ratified two more bills on Monday; a bill to amend the Public Finance Act and a bill to amend the Land Act.
