Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been summoned to the police headquarters for questioning.

In a press conference on Saturday, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) spokesperson Heena Waleed announced that Yameen has been summoned to the police headquarters at 14:00 hours.

“As you know, President Yameen has been unfairly prosecuted and imprisoned on a political charge by the current administration. I alert our supporters and the press that he has been summoned to the police headquarters again today, as part of the current administration’s continued abuses against him,” she said.

Heena said that the conviction against Yameen was politically motivated, and called for his immediate release.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering in 2019. He was transferred to home confinement back in April following an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Maafushi Prison.

Yameen has been pressed with new money laundering and bribery charges, and the police have also requested more charges against him in connection to another case.
