13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 from Dhoonidhoo Custodial.

Daily COVID-19 case updates released by Health Protection Agency (HPA) this Wednesday show Maldives recorded 253 new cases, 17 of which were from industrial islands or islands used for other purposes.

An official from HPA said 13 of the cases were from Dhoonidhoo.

Maldives Police Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding the COVID-19 cases in Dhoonidhoo – an island in K. Atoll used as a custodial jail.

Meanwhile, Bar Council has advised defense lawyers to be cautious and follow HPA’s guidelines when travelling to Dhoonidhoo to meet clients.

With the 253 new cases this Wednesday, Maldives now has 26,920 confirmed COVID-19 cases. 23,935 of them have since recovered, while 71 have died from complications.

The country currently has 2,905 active cases. 83 of the patients are hospitalized.
