Dh. Meedhoo councilors have been suspended for three months following an inquiry by Local Government Authority (LGA) into multiple allegations of misconduct.

LGA announced this Wednesday that its inquiry found the councilors failed to satisfactory perform their duties, were negligent in performing their duties, misused the council’s powers and resources, and acted in contravention of the code of ethics of councilors.

LGA said they found some of the misconduct took place repeatedly, and that the findings of the inquiry were damaging to the council and the decentralized system of governance.

LGA said that Meedhoo Council’s president Ilyas Ismail Latheef, vice president Shuraif Ibrahim Rasheed, and councilor Mohamed Thaufeeq have been placed under three-month suspension without pay.

The three councilors - who belong to the main ruling party MDP - were placed under suspension on March 4.

LGA has also suspended H. A. Utheem Council’s president Abdulla Rasheed and vice president Mohamed Adam.

Abdulla Rasheed was placed under one-month suspension without pay starting April 1, while Mohamed Adam was suspended for 10 days.
