Police officers took their oath on Saturday to commence the implementation of the new Maldives Police Service Act.
The oath was administered by Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on Saturday morning.
The new Maldives Police Service Act, which took effect on Friday, declares police as a civil and security service outside of the civil service.
The new law is also designed to make police service uniform, administratively decentralized, and exempts the service from several provisions of Employment Act.
Speaking at the oath taking ceremony, Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan urged police officers to execute their powers within the bounds of laws and regulations, and maintain official standards.
He also advised the police to serve their duty with dedication and free from bias and personal interest.
“You must keep in mind that police officers need to be accountable for every action,” he said.
The ceremony on Saturday was also attended by Home Minister Imran Abdulla, and Vice President Faisal Naseem.
