A resolution has been submitted to the parliament to inquire about the one-room flats constructed under the previous administration.
The resolution was accepted with the vote of 43 parliamentarians and calls to find out what happened to the “missing” one-room flats under the Hiyaa Housing Project. MP for Naifaru Ahmed Shiyam submitted the resolution.
The one-room flats were to be awarded from the first floor of flats under construction by state companies under the Hiyaa Housing Project. The companies were to complete the construction of the flats, which were to be handed over to the Housing Development Corporation, which will then award the flats to eligible applicants.
However, public outcry was observed when the government terminated the entire category of one-room flats from the final list of awardees for the project, the reason that there were not enough flats constructed.
MP Shiyam’s resolution called on the government to explain why it was saying that there were not enough flats when the flats were in fact completed.
MP Shiyam’s resolution also read that Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam had stated that there were no one-room flats constructed, but later stated that only MWSC had completed the one-room flat project where there were only 36 flats in existence.
He went on to state that while there were a total of 12 towers under the project, one-room flats should be there on the first four floors of the flats, which would mean that more than 900 one-room flats would be there.
He also added that the government was selling overpriced flats under the government-sponsored project called Fahi Dhiriulhun, after stating that one-room flats were not constructed under the Hiyaa Housing Project.
He said that the matter was very much connected with the hope of the youth population and the government’s conduct regarding the housing project was a cause of a lot of concern for the public.
MP Shiyam said that the government had to explain what happened to the flats in writing. MP Shiyam also stated that the former administration had two policies for selling the housing units which would bring the actual monthly price of the flats to MVR 3,000-4,000.
MP Shiyam’s resolution is seeing a lot of criticism by governing MDP members in the parliament towards former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and former President Abdulla Yameen over how the Hiyaa Project flats were initially awarded.
