The local island of Maafushi has been placed under monitoring mechanisms by health authorities.
Maafushi Council said that it had been informed by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) against the movement of people to and from the island for the time being.
The HPA specified that the measure was due to the situation with COVID-19 which required further inquiry.
The island is one of the most popular local islands in terms of guesthouse tourism due to its close proximity with the capital Male' City and has the highest number of guesthouses in the nation. The island had been placed under monitoring mechanisms previously as well, however, the capital Male' City has remained to be the only epicenter of the viru8s where a widespread community transmission is still continuing. The capital is still under lockdown since identifying its first case on April 15.
According to HPA statistics, Maldives has now confirmed a total of 12,578 cases since identifying the first case back in March. 11,559 individuals have also made full recoveries from the virus. Currently, there are 967 active cases of the virus in the nation.
