Minister: Kuredu situation under control, no need to panic

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed has assured that the situation in the island of Kuredo is under control after two cases of the Covid-19 disease were tested positive from the island.

At a press conference held today, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed stated that the government was fully prepared to deal with the situation and that the ministry had stocked on half a million face masks in preparation.

He added that there was no reason to panic or worry and that the government had estimated that the disease would be identified in the Maldives.

The minister also stated that around 125,000 bookings to the country had been canceled as a result of the virus which originated in China.

A quarantine center in K. Villingilivaru has also been established which can hold up to 30 people in a situation. The minister noted that it was a difficult operation but the island was now ready to receive people for quarantine purposes.

The minister also called for calm regarding the identification of cases and stated that everyone must be thorough regarding the standard operation procedure for the situation.

He also added that the situation in Kuredu is under control and that there were a total of 696 tourists on the island which is one of the biggest in the country. The response center was also providing the resort with any assistance required to deal with the situation. Kuredu is the location where the two cases of Covid-19 in the country were identified.

The Minister also said that no resort would have to face the situation alone and that everyone was united to face the issue.
