President: Maldives has the ideal model for climate action

The best plan to reduce the effects of climate change is the "Climate Smart Resilient Island Initiative" followed by the Maldives, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated.

The President was speaking at the United Nations 74th General Assembly's Climate Action Summit held by Secretary-General António Guterres. The President stated the best measures that can be followed by small island nations in the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

The President then noted the "Climate Smart Resilient Island Initiative" followed by the Maldives and the steps included in the initiative that can be attained by small island nations.

The "Climate Smart Resilient Island Initiative" sets out measures to be taken in 11 areas related to the environment. They include setting out protected areas or zones, initiative against single-use plastic, Gaining the assistance of new inventions and innovations, connecting islands with a transport system, guaranteeing the safety of food, Encouraging and promoting eco friendly tourism, Developing the country in a manner that would reduce the damage from climate change, Use of renewable energy, A sustainable system of waste management among other things.

The President stated that the use of such a model was to build a community connected to the surrounding natural environment. The President also called for other small nations to follow the Maldives in adopting this model.

The President pointed out that creating an economy less dependent on carbon was a step that can be taken to reduce the dangers of climate change. The President then called for international support for the fight against climate change and noted the massive dangers faced by the world due to climate change. 

The Climate Action Summit was held under the Paris Agreement to discuss and discover the best ways to address the effects of climate change and reach the goal of sustainable development.
