Voting has begun in the first election for the newly established Bar Council.
Total 23 candidates are running for positions at the Bar Council.
Voting is underway in Male’ City and Addu City. Two ballot boxes have been kept in Male’ City while one ballot box has been kept in Addu City.
1,487 local lawyers are eligible to vote in the elections. 1,475 of the lawyers are registered to vote in Male’ City, and the remaining 12 lawyers are registered to vote in Addu City.
The Bar Council’s executive committee is composed of; a person elected president by lawyers, a person election vice president by lawyers, the attorney general, and six additional people elected by lawyers.
Two are running for president, two for vice president, and 19 for the additional positions within the exco.
However, one of the candidates has been barred from running in the election because he does not meet the qualifications.
Former attorney general Husnu Al Suood and leading lawyer Maumoon Hameed are running for the op position at the Bar Council.
The contenders for the second top position are; former attorney general Abdulla Muiz and former Civil Court judge Mohamed Haleem.
Interim results of the election will be announced later this Saturday, and the official results will be announced on Sunday.
The election is being run on a budget of MVR 1.2 million.
