Bar Council of Maldives (BCM) has extended the deadline to file candidacy for vacant posts in the Council’s Executive Committee.
As per BCM, the deadline to file candidacy has been extended until October 9th. Members elected through this election are appointed for a three-year term.
BCM said the deadline was extended to facilitate the opportunity for as many lawyers as possible to file their candidacy.
BCM’s Executive Committee members bear the legal responsibility of undertaking various efforts to develop the legal profession, create opportunities for the youth of the future generation and empower lawyers.
Prior to this, the Executive Committee comprised of President, Vice President and six members that are elected by lawyers in addition to the Attorney General.
However, with the third amendment to the Legal Professions Act which was passed by the Parliament and subsequently ratified by the President – the Attorney General is no longer on the Executive Committee.
The amendment aimed at enhancing the council’s autonomy, while ensuring the policies governing the legal fraternity are made by those selected by them, was ratified by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on September 3rd.
