Elderly inmate at Male’ Prison passes away

A 92-year-old inmate at the Male’ Prison passed away under care at the hospital this Saturday morning.

Maldives Correctional Service reports that the inmate, Rekifuthaa from Maskothange in G. Dh. Gadhdhoo, passed away under treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) at 11:30 am.

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) reports its rapid response team is investigating the case.

Rekufuthaa was serving a 10-year sentence for engaging in sexual relations with a minor when he passed away.

He was sentenced in 2016 and was up for release in January, 2025.
