Counter-terror workshop held for tourism sector stakeholders

A Counter Terrorism Emergency Preparedness Workshop aimed at Maldivian tourism sector stakeholder was held at Hotel Jen this Wednesday.

The one-day workshop is a collaboration between UK International Protect and Prepare Project, Maldives Police Service, Jakarta Center for Law Enforcement Corporation and Tourism Ministry of Maldives.

This third workshop of its kind, it is designed to create awareness on how to respond to a terrorist attack, standard protocol during a terrorist attack, ways to stengthen the security at tourist resorts, and plan of action for security officers who work in the tourism sector in response to terrorist attacks.

Maldives Police Service says that the instructors of the workshop are experienced and well-educated in the field.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen stated that tourism sector plays the biggest role in the Maldivian economy and if such an event were to occur the whole country will face the consequences.

He stressed that Maldives needed to strengthen counter-terrorism measures and improve collaboration between Maldives Police Service and international agencies in order to maintain the peace and security within the Maldivian community.

Coordinator of International Protect and Prepare Maldives Sean Kelly and 34 staff from Maldivian resorts, guesthouses and hotels took part in the workshop.
