The parliamentary election held in Maldives on April 6 was a joke, says Iguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah – who failed to secure his re-election.

Falah had lost his bid for re-election to the 19th Parliament to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidate Hassan Ahmed (Hassantey) by just 89 votes.

Speaking during the Parliament sitting this Wednesday morning, Falah stressed his loss at the election by such a small margin.

“I have 49 votes counted in my favor. The margin between us is 60 something votes. But they have rejected by repeated requests for a recount,” said Falah.

He said that the parliamentary election had been “very unfair and a great joke of an election”.

Falah had won total 949 votes at the election, while his soon-to-be successor Hassantey has won 1,038 votes.

The results of the parliamentary election are as follows:

  • MDP: 65 seats
  • PPM: 5 seats
  • JP: 5 seats
  • PNC: 3 seats
  • MDA: 2 seats
  • Independent candidates: 7 seats
