Police warns illegally parked vehicles will be towed

Maldives Police Service has issued warning illegally parked vehicles will be towed despite the decision to suspend issuance of parking tickets and fines.

MPS reports the authority ceased issuance of parking tickets and fined for illegally parked vehicles at the instruction of the government.

It is part of the bid to fulfil President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral pledge that no Maldivian citizen should be fined for illegal parking as long as the government is unable to allocate sufficient parking space.

A media official from MPS reported this Wednesday that though the agency has suspended issuance of parking tickets, it will continue to tow illegally parked vehicles.

The official said the agency will also be contacting illegally parked vehicles to allow them to voluntarily move their vehicles to a legal parking space.

The suspension of issuance of parking tickets has led to an increase in number of illegally parked vehicles, making it a public nuisance, with illegally parking vehicles blocking entrance and exists to pavements and zebra crosses.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, during a previous statement to the press, said the government was working on creating additional parking space.
