Vice President of PPM, Aishath Azima Shukoor, has said that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is being summoned to the police tomorrow in relation to the use of campaign funds.

Last night, Maldives Police Service said that they are investigating possible illegal spending by President Yameen while in office.

And President Yameen has been ordered to appear at the police headquarters at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

The Legal Affiars Minister at the President’s Office during the government of President Yameen, Azima, took to Facebook today stating that the police inquiry is regarding the funds that came into the President’s account during the election period.

The case was filed with the police by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Azima said that the accounts that allegedly receive funds were accounts declared with the Elections Commission as per regulations.

Former Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, had previously said that President Yameen contacted the Governor of MMA for information once he learned that the FIU has filed a case with the police.

Then Spokesperson, Muaz, said that the letter was sent without the knowledge of the Governor and since there was no evidence incriminating the President, the letter was retracted from the Police.

However the MMA at the time said that they filed 137 cases with the various investigative bodies and none of the cases or letters have been retracted.
