Waste collected from Male’ City caps at 775 tonnes

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has said that a total of 175 tonnes of waste was collected from Male’ City alone on the inauguration of the cleaning program "Saafu Raajje - Aharengeves Zimma" (Clean Maldives - My Responsibility Too) on Saturday.

Talking on the state media regarding yesterday’s program, the Waste Collection Manager at WAMCO, Mohamed Shan, said that 40 percent of the waste collected in the Male’ City area was plastic.

The national-wide cleaning program conducted in the inhabited islands this past Saturday is part of the government’s pledges in the first 100 days. It is intended to be an ongoing program.

Alongside the cleaning program, the Environment Ministry has decided to identify people who litter the streets and announce their names.

Speaking at the program last night, Director General of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Ibrahim Naeem, said that the EPA is working to identify the individuals that illegally litter the streets.

Naeem said that EPA will continue to clean the streets and will be installing cameras where waste piles are noticed to identify the offenders.
