Former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has said that the banks in the country along with the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has to be held responsible for the MMPRC scandal.

Responding to a question from Sun Media at the press conference last night after the ceremony to award the PPM ticket for the Parliamentary Election 2019, the former President, implied that a bank cheque issued from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) would not go an account of the SOF without the knowledge of the MMA.

The former President said that when such large quantities are being transferred repeatedly, the Bank of Maldives (BML) has to say something. And raised the question of why the banks complied with it.

President Yameen said that when a cheque involved with MMPRC is being processed, the MMA has to observe whether SOF is a private company or a government company. And should know that government cheqeus should go to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority.

The former President said that if a criminal investigation is taken place, the responsibilities should fall on the banks and the MMA.

In response to the allegations that such massive corruption and misappropriation of funds would not take place without the knowledge of the President, Yameen said that direct action against it was taken by the President’s Office. And asked why he would stop it if he was involved.
