Ex-President Yameen: No decision yet on running for Parliament

Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom says he has not yet made a decision on whether to run for the upcoming parliamentary elections or not.

PPM, last Monday night, handed party tickets to 24 candidates for the parliamentary elections in March, 2019.

The former ruling party had decided against holding primaries and announced it will be awarding tickets to party loyalists.

Yameen made his first public appearance since he left office at Monday’s function.

Speaking to press, Yameen said there was plenty of time left for the parliamentary elections, and that he hasn’t yet made up his mind on whether to run for parliament or not.

Before getting elected President in 2013, Yameen served as parliament representative for M. Mulaku constituency.

Yameen announced his party will he awarding tickets to more candidates soon.

22 of the 24 candidates awarded tickets last Monday will be running to defend their parliamentary seats. But Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik will be running for South Thinadhoo constituency, and Dhaandhoo MP Ahmed Assad will be running for South Galolhu constituency.
