Yameen summoned to court for late September in bribery, money laundering case

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been summoned to appear before the Criminal Court later this month in relation to bribery and money laundering charges filed against him by the state.

A summons issued by the court on Thursday instructed Yameen to appear at 9:15am on September 29^th.

Yameen has been summoned for a hearing on pre-trial submissions in the case concerning allegations of accepting bribes and engaging in money laundering.

Yameen was initially convicted on December 25, 2022, in connection with alleged corruption related to the lease of V. Aarah. However, after an extended appeal process, the High Court overturned the conviction in late 2023 and ordered a retrial.

At the time, the High Court ruled that new evidence presented by the state against Yameen could not be admitted during the retrial. The Criminal Court had previously convicted Yameen of corruption and money laundering in the Aarah case after allowing the new evidence to be submitted.

However, the Supreme Court later ruled on July 1 of last year that the new evidence was inadmissible.
