14M stolen in bank theft recovered in washing machine

Bank of Maldives branch in Gaafu Alifu Vilingili.

MVR 14 million stolen from the Bank of Maldives branch in Gaafu Alifu Vilingili has been recovered inside a washing machine at an abandoned house on the island.

A total of eight people have been arrested in relation to the bank theft where the thieves broke in through the roof last Monday.

Sources have told Sun Media that the police recovered that money last night.

Police closed down the area and counted the money with the help from the bank staff including a large amount of US dollars and local currency.

Yesterday, police announced that six people were arrested and no further details were given. Sources say that two more arrests including a foreign national was arrested today. And the garage the foreign national works at is being searched by the police as well.

Bank Services was put on hold at the island due to the theft and services will resume after the police completes their on scene procedures.
