Authorities seize currency cache being smuggled out of Maldives

Maldives Customs has seized a large amount of currency being smuggled out of Maldives.

The currency cache was seized at the Velana International Airport on November 4 from three Indian citizens who had tickets to Singapore.

Maldives Customs said the authority has been tipped-off of an operation to smuggle undeclared currency out of Maldives. And discovered the currency after officers questioned and searched them when they arrived to check-in to their flight.

The cache seized includes currency from different countries. The total value of the money is unclear at this point.

Customs said it has transferred the suspects and the currency cache to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.

MPS was not immediately available for comment regarding the case.

In a similar case, Maldives Customs seized a gold bar weighing 1 kg being smuggled out of Maldives last October.
