MP proposes increasing fee for presidential candidates to MVR 100K

Fares-Maathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef has proposed reforming the Presidential Elections Act to allow the administrative fee for presidential candidates to be increased from MVR 40,000 to MVR 100,000.

The 1st Reading of the Bill by MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef was held at the People’s Majlis this Monday afternoon.

MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef, who submitted the Bill on behalf of the government, said the government wants to increase the administrative fee for presidential candidates due to reforms proposed for the Elections Act.

The Maldivian government says the purpose of the reforms to the Elections Act is to ensure every election held in Maldives is independent, fair, transparent and reliable.

1st Reading was held for two Bills on reform of Presidential Elections Act and one bill on reform of Elections Act this Monday afternoon.

The second Bill on reform of Presidential Elections Act was put forth by leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group – Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

MP Nihan Hussain Manik has proposed setting the condition that anyone with citizenship in another country can only enter the presidential race 10 years after he revokes the citizenship.
