Majlis adjourned after 1st reading of reforms to election laws

This Monday’s People’s Majlis sitting has been adjourned after the 1st Reading of the reforms proposed to the Elections Act and Presidential Elections Act by the government.

This Monday’s Majlis sitting began at 1 pm.

The 1st Reading was held for two bills on reform of Presidential Elections Act and one bill on reform of Elections Act.

The two bills on reform of Presidential Elections Act was submitted to the Majlis by leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group – Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik and Fares-Maathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef.

The bill on reform of the Elections Act was submitted by Holhudhoo MP Ali Mohamed.

“Sun” has been informed the reforms were submitted at the request of the Elections Commission.

President of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef says none of the reforms will not result in a drastic change to the current elections system.
