EC requests MVR 14M to hold by-elections for 12 constituencies

The Elections Commission (EC) has requested Ministry of Finance for MVR 14 million to hold by—elections for the 12-constituencies left with no parliament representative.

EC’s member and spokesperson, Ahmed Akram reported to “Sun” that the commission made the decision to hold by-elections for the 12 constituencies following the implementation of the Anti-Defection Act and the Supreme Court verdict.

Supreme Court is yet to issue its ruling on the case submitted by the State requesting cancellation of the court’s order on February 1 to reinstate the 12 parliamentarians.

The 12 MPs are:

  1. Dhangethi MP Ilhaam Ahmed
  2. South Machangolhi MP Abdulla Sinan
  3. Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa
  4. Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth
  5. Vilingili MP Saud Hussain
  6. Noth Thinadhoo MP Saudhulla Hilmy
  7. South Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed
  8. Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla
  9. Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhy
  10. Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed
  11. Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim
  12. South Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah
