Court orders Maumoon be detained pending outcome of trial

The Criminal Court has ordered that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom – who has been charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act for an attempt to stage a coup – to be kept detained pending the outcome of the trial.

The former President was arrested at his residence at Endherimaage on the night of 5 February 2018 after a State of Emergency was declared. 

The State of Emergency in the Maldives will be coming to an end tonight. 

Talking to the press today, President Maumoon's attorney, Maumoon Hameed said that his cliend was arrested illegally. He said that his client has to be brought in front of a judge within 24 hours after his arrest. 

He said that no reviews were made before the decision at the hearing today. And so it would be filed for appeal very soon. 

Aside from the former President, his son, the MP for Dhiggaru constitutency, Faaris Maumoon, son-in-law, Mohamed Nadheem along with the Chief Justice, Abdulla Saeed, Supereme Court Judge, Ali Hameed Mohamed, MP Abdulla Sinaan, MP Il'ham Ahmed and the former Police Commissioner, Ahmed Areef, all have been charged with attempting an act of terrorism.
