Shareef’s nomination to EC sent to Committee for evaluation

People’s Majlis has accepted Ahmed Shareef, the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation’s name for consideration for the vacant seat at Elections Commission (EC).

Lawmakers accepted President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s nominee, Shareef, for consideration and submitted the nomination to the Committee on Independent Institutions during the Majlis sitting held this Monday morning.

In a letter to the People’s Majlis, President Yameen wrote that Shareef is his recommendations to the post, and that he is sending Shareef’s name, as well as the name of other candidates who applied to the post for consideration.

Shareef, who currently serves as MD of Fenaka Corporation previously also served as Secretary-General of EC.

He served as MP for Thimarafushi constituency after winning a by-election during the last parliamentary term, but lost at re-elections in 2014.

Application for EC membership was opened after the former President of EC, Ahmed Sulaiman resigned from his post in February.

Ahmed Ali, the Secretary-General of EC also resigned from the commission in February.
