China opposed to UN intervention in Maldives

The Chinese government has said that it is opposed to the United Nations interfering political unrest in the Maldives and is confident that the Maldives can find a solution internally.

In an interview to India's Hindhu Times, the Spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Geng Shuang said that China has followed closely the situation in the Maldives and believes that the current situation and dispute in the Maldives are internal affairs.

"It should be properly resolved through dialogue and consultation by relevant parties. The international community should respect the Maldives sovereignty and territorial integrity and play a constructive role for the dialogue between the relevant parties," Geng added.

Answering to a question if China will support UN's mediation in the crisis, Geng Shuang, said that China is willing to maintain close communication with relevant parties on the situation in the Maldives so as to restore the normal order as soon as possible.

The political unrest in the Maldives arose after the government delayed execute a court order, claiming obstructions, from the Supreme Court issued on 1 February 2018.

And on 5 February, a State of Emergency was declared and the Chief Justice along with a Supreme Court Judge was arrested in suspicion of conspiracy to overthrow the government.
