India calls to obey the Supreme Court order in Maldives

Indian government has called to the Maldivian government to implement the Supreme Court ruling passed last night to free nine political figures.

In a statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs today, the Indian government that "it is imperative for all organs of the Government of Maldives to respect and abide by the order of the apex court."

"We also hope that the safety and security of the Indian expatriates in Maldives will be ensured by the Maldivian authorities under all circumstances." The statement said.

While the Indian government has issued a statement on the situation in the Maldives, the US Ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Atul Keshap, too has congratulated and welcomed the Supreme Court ruling.

The court order issued from the Supreme Court tonight said that the cases which has political influences due to the different accords the country have taken part of, has to be started over.

And so, until a verdict can be reached in those cases again, the political prisoners in the jails must be freed. The Supreme Court ordered the release of the former President, Mohamed Nasheed, former Defence Minister, Mohamed Nazim, President of Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Imran Abdulla, former Vice President, Ahmed Adheeb, former Prosecutor General, Muhuthaz Muhsin, Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, MP for Dhiggaru constituency, Faaris Maumoon, Magistrate at the Maamiligi Court, Ahmed Nihan and Haamid Ismail.
