United beats City in Manchester derby, Chelsea wins again

Manchester United broke its losing streak to crosstown rival Manchester City on Sunday, while Chelsea moved one step closer to the Premier league title.

United's 4-2 win at Old Trafford ended a run of four straight losses to City, whose title defense continues to fall apart as Chelsea eked out a 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers.

The leaders— and several title contenders— of Europe's other major leagues played on Saturday to have an extra day of rest before turning to the Champions League quarterfinals.

ENGLAND

City's sharp decline was magnified in a heavy loss to United, dropping the defending champions 12 points behind Chelsea after the leaders' latest scrappy win inched them closer to the title.

Third-place United moved four points clear of its stumbling local rival, whose manager Manuel Pellegrini is facing mounting scrutiny after City's staggering dip in form.

Cesc Fabregas scored an 88th-minute winner with Chelsea's first shot on target, leaving Jose Mourinho's team seven points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand and needing 11 more points to capture a first league title since 2010.

United responded to going behind in the eighth minute to Sergio Aguero's goal by scoring twice in 13 minutes through Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini.

Juan Mata ran onto Wayne Rooney's through-ball to make it 3-1 in the 67th and Chris Smalling made the most of more poor defending to head home unmarked at a free kick seven minutes later.

ITALY

Lazio beat Empoli 4-0 to take over second spot in Serie A from city rival Roma, which was held 1-1 at Torino.

Stefano Mauri, Miroslav Klose, Antonio Candreva and Felipe Anderson scored to give Lazio an eighth consecutive win despite playing the last 32 minutes with 10 men after defender Diego Novaretti was sent off following a second booking.

Lazio moved a point above Roma after Torino substitute Maxi Lopez cancelled out Alessandro Florenzi's penalty.

Napoli climbed to fourth after beating Fiorentina 3-0 to leapfrog above its opponent. Sampdoria moved level with Fiorentina after drawing 1-1 at AC Milan.

Atalanta beat Sassuolo 2-1 to move seven points above the relegation zone as Cesena lost 1-0 to Chievo Verona. Palermo won 3-1 at Udinese.

FRANCE

Marseille's hopes of winning a record-equaling 10th French league title took a serious blow with a 1-0 loss at Bordeaux that left the club five points behind the leader Paris Saint-Germain.

Marseille hit the post twice before midfielder Cedric Yambere scored in the 61st, making sure Bordeaux kept its 38-year unbeaten home record against Marseille intact.

Saint-Etienne remained in contention for a European place with a 1-0 win against Nantes. Reims's 1-0 win over Guingamp guaranteed the Brittany side topflight football next season. Toulouse beat Montpellier 1-0, while last-place Lens was held 0-0 by Lorient.

SPAIN

Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio's gruesome leg injury near the end of a 1-1 draw at Getafe overshadowed play in the Spanish league.

Villarreal said that Musacchio broke his fibula and dislocated his left ankle when it completely doubled over while he was running in the 76th minute.

The Argentine center back was taken to a nearby hospital in Madrid where he underwent surgery.

Espanyol beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 to leapfrog the Basque club into eighth place.

Deportivo La Coruna came back twice to draw 2-2 at Real Sociedad in the promising debut of coach Victor Sanchez del Amo.

Cordoba moved one step closer to sealing its relegation after a woeful 2-0 loss at home to a modest Elche side.

GERMANY

Daniel Ginczek's injury-time strike gave Stuttgart a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen and lifted the home team off the bottom of the Bundesliga.

Ginczek scored twice, his winning goal coming after Jannik Vestergaard had equalized in the 86th minute.

Ten-man Cologne boosted its chances of staying up with a 3-2 win over Hoffenheim.
