Singapore's prime minister diagnosed with prostate cancer

SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but is expected to recover fully after undergoing surgery, his office said Sunday.

Lee, 63, will have surgery to remove his prostate gland on Monday, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement posted on its official website.

Last month, Lee underwent an MRI of the prostate that showed suspicious lesions, the statement said. A subsequent biopsy found that one out of 38 samples contained cancer cells.

Lee decided to undergo surgery on the advice of a panel of doctors, and "is expected to recover fully," the statement said, adding that he will be on medical leave for one week.

Lee, whose father, Lee Kuan Yew, was Singapore's first prime minister, has been the city state's leader since 2004.
