Brazil's president narrows opponent's lead

SAO PAULO (AP) — A new poll shows that President Dilma Rousseff appears to have narrowed the lead enjoyed by her chief rival in a likely second-round runoff in Brazil's upcoming presidential election.

The poll released Wednesday by the respected Ibope polling institute says that 46 percent of those questioned would vote for Marina Silva, while 39 percent said they would vote for Rousseff.

Ibope's previous poll showed that 45 percent of respondents would vote for Silva in the expected second-round, compared to 36 percent for Rousseff.

Support for Rousseff in the first round rose to 37 percent compared to 34 percent registered in the last poll.

Ibope interviewed 2,506 voters between Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. Its survey has a margin of error of two percentage points.
