An agreement has been signed to strengthen technical capacity for the maintenance and management of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations in the Maldives.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

The Environment Ministry described the agreement as a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to establish an environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation system.

Under the agreement, specialized training opportunities will be provided to technical personnel working in relevant sectors to develop their expertise in repairing and maintaining electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

The initiative aims to develop a skilled local workforce capable of ensuring the long-term sustainability of electric buses and other vehicles provided under the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project, “Integrated, Sustainable and Low Emissions Transport in the Maldives”.

The Ministry further noted that the collaboration would strengthen the institutional and technical capacity needed to advance environmentally friendly transport solutions in the future.

The government stated that the agreement would pave the way for the sustainable, long-term use of green transportation resources across the country.

The administration continues to implement various initiatives to protect the Maldives’ fragile environment. Notably, the recently established national taxi line, introduced to address the longstanding shortage of taxis in the Greater Malé area, operates using electric vehicles. In addition, the government has introduced green-colored license plates specifically for electric vehicles to promote and distinguish environmentally friendly transport.
