Maldive Gas, a subsidiary of the State Trading Organization (STO), has changed the amount of gas it loads into its cylinders, while charging customers based on the weight of bottled gas.

The company said in a statement that the Maldives is facing difficulties in importing gas due to sharp increases in global market prices. Despite these challenges, Maldive Gas said it has temporarily adjusted refill quantities to ensure continuity of service.

Under the changes, a 10-kilogram cylinder will now be filled with seven kilograms of gas, a 22-kilogram cylinder with 14 kilograms, and a 45-kilogram cylinder with 31 kilograms. Maldive Gas said the adjustment will not affect prices, and customers will continue to be charged at the existing rate based on the weight of gas supplied. The company said the changes have now been made public.

In early February, Maldive Gas replaced the 10-kilogram cylinders it was selling with seven-kilogram cylinders, though the issue was later resolved. There have also been complaints of severe delays in receiving gas after placing orders. Maldive Gas said it is working to increase national storage capacity to prevent such disruptions in the future. Once completed, the project will allow the company to store up to three months’ worth of gas at a time.
