The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports the fire spread to at least nine neighboring buildings; four homes and five workshops and garages.
The fire prompted local authorities to evacuate people living in the neighborhood, as well as to shut down the island’s school, which is also located in the area and sustained smoke damage.
Firefighters from the Funadhoo Airport and the police, as well as firefighters deployed from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Kulhudhuffushi Fire Station continue to battle the fire.
In its latest update, the MNDF announced that 90 percent of the fire was now under control.
The Sh. Atoll Hospital has suspended outpatient services, stating that it will only be taking in emergency patients as they deal with the people injured in the fire.
