The Parliament, on Tuesday, unanimously approved a budget of MVR 133 million for the Auditor General’s Office for the coming year.
The budget was approved with the unanimous votes of all 46 members present, following a review by the Public Accounts Committee. The Committee approved the proposed allocation of MVR 133,590,266 without any amendments.
Although the Auditor General’s Office submits its budget separately to the Parliament, the allocation must be incorporated into the state budget when it is approved. The office has scheduled a total of 394 audits for next year.
According to the approved budget, MVR 85.8 million has been allocated for recurrent expenditure, while MVR 43.5 million has been earmarked for Public Sector Investment Programmes (PSIP).
Major allocations include MVR 43.5 million for the construction of the new Auditor General’s Office building in Hulhumalé, MVR 19,850,659 for administrative expenses, and MVR 10,646,080 for staff training. A further MVR 981,000 has been allocated for the Auditor General’s salary and allowances, accounting for approximately one percent of the total budget.
Of the MVR 134.2 million allocated to the office for the current year, MVR 56.9 million has been spent to date. The office estimates that a further MVR 45 million will be spent by the end of the year, leaving a projected surplus of MVR 31 million. The Auditor General’s Office informed the Majlis that this anticipated balance has been taken into account when preparing next year’s budget.
The Public Accounts Committee initially approved the proposed budget of MVR 133.5 million on the 14th of this month, following the formal submission of the office’s budget requirements by Auditor General Hussain Niyazy on October 13.
