Shujau Ali has secured main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ticket for the upcoming by-election for the vacant presidency of the V. Thinadhoo Council.

Shujau was the most recent president of the council. The position became vacant after the Local Government Authority (LGA) determined on July 2 that he had forfeited his council seat for allegedly switching political parties after the commencement of the council’s current fifth term.

Speaking to Sun tonight, Shujau confirmed that he was the only individual to apply for the MDP ticket. As a result, he was awarded the ticket without the need for a primary election.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the Thinadhoo Council presidency is next Monday, while the by-election is scheduled to be held on November 28th.

Shujau had previously told Sun that his removal was based on a circumstance not addressed by law, arguing that the LGA had made its decision without following proper procedures or conducting adequate legal scrutiny. He also said he remained committed to contesting the by-election and reclaiming the seat once the Elections Commission (EC) announced the poll.
